Mutant’s company slogan is “Leave Humanity Behind,” but don’t let the aggressive black and red branding scare you—Mutant Mass is a great option for those looking to pack on serious muscle.

For those who struggle to eat enough whole food to support their goals, often called hard gainers, the best mass gainers offer a convenient way to boost your calorie intake without having to force down another meal. In this Mutant Mass review, I’ll share my personal testing experience and explain everything you need to know about this popular weight gain formula.

Personal Experience and Hands-On Testing

Our testers include nutritionists, certified trainers, Olympians, gym owners, and more. Unbiased product testing is our specialty, and we’re here to tell you the good, the bad, and everything in between when it comes to supplements.

For this review, I used Mutant Mass after every workout for just over a week. While I’ve tried mass gainers on occasion in the past, this was my first time using one consistently. That’s why I relied, as always, on our trusty GGR supplement testing methodology to give Mutant Mass an accurate rating.

We assess supplements using specific categories, including:

  • Price per serving: Are you getting a good value or spending too much?
  • Solubility: How well does this product mix in a shaker cup?
  • Taste: One of the most important factors—is this enjoyable to consume?
  • Third-party testing: Has a third party verified the safety and label accuracy?

These criteria, and more, help us share honest feedback to help you make an informed decision. Now, let’s get into the details of Mutant Mass, and I’ll tell you what I think of this popular weight-gaining supplement

A Quick Look at Mutant Mass

Mutant Mass is a high-protein, high-calorie formula designed to supply the nutrients and calories that can help users gain weight. While packing in calories seems like an easy task, doing it with healthy sources can be challenging for many, which is where Mutant Mass shines.

You’re not just getting protein and sugar either, as a serving of Mutant Mass is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, mostly sourced from whole foods like barley, sweet potato, rolled oats, coconut oil, flaxseed oil, avocado, and more.

With most mass gainers, including Mutant Mass, the recommended serving size will give more than 50 grams of protein, and usually over 1,000 calories. If you struggle to gain weight, this is a powerful way to boost your calorie intake, but you need to be careful.

Sydney Lappe, RD, says: “Mass gainers can be game-changers for individuals with high calorie needs. However, without ensuring they fit into your nutrition strategy, excess calories may result in more fat than muscle gain, even with a proper resistance training regimen.”

RELATED: Mass Gainer Pros and Cons

In addition to mass gainers, Mutant sells a variety of workout supplements, including protein powder, pre-workouts, meal replacement shakes, and BCAAs. The company branding leans toward the aggressive side, with black and red colors, bold names on many of their products, and a tagline of “Leave Humanity Behind.”

While many user reviews mention that Mutant Mass seems marketed toward bodybuilders and hardcore gym-goers, don’t let the labeling and branding intimidate you. Mutant makes high-quality, well-designed formulas that can support any fitness goal, even if you’re not looking to become a top bodybuilder or powerlifter.

Before You Buy

  • Mutant Mass gainer packs in the calories, but you don’t need to use the recommended four scoops every time, you can stick with one or two if that fits your goals better.
  • You can trust the ingredients in Mutant Mass, as it’s regularly third-party tested by Informed Choice testing.
  • Mass gainers are certainly high in calories and can support muscle growth, but be careful not to add too many calories if you want to avoid unnecessary fat gain.

Is Mutant Mass Worth It?

Before you order Mutant Mass for yourself, you’ll want to ensure this is the right product to help you reach your goals. Due to the extra calories in each serving, mass gainers tend to be on the pricey side of supplements.

Great for:

  • Those who struggle to eat enough calories from whole food
  • Anyone looking for a protein shake that will support muscle gain
  • People who want to use a shake as a meal replacement

Not recommended for:

  • Anyone on a fat-loss diet
  • Those who prefer to get their macros from whole foods
  • Anyone looking to avoid lactose or gluten

Experience Using Mutant Mass

I tested Mutant Mass for about a week, using the recommended two-scoop serving after my weightlifting sessions. It had been a few years since I’d tried a mass gainer, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was very impressed with the flavor and texture.

The protein mixes very well in a shaker cup with milk or water—it doesn’t mix quite as fast as a pure whey protein might, and it took me 15 to 20 seconds to get it completely mixed, but that’s to be expected with all of the additives. There was a very light grainy texture, which I’d guess is from the carbs, but it didn’t bother me at all, and it wasn’t clumpy.

Looking down as a hand is about to pour a scoop of Mutant Mass into a shaker cup of milk.

I used the Triple Chocolate flavor and loved the taste. It was somewhere between a chocolate milkshake and brownie batter, certainly not overpowering or over sweetened.

Finally, I have a bit of a sensitive stomach when it comes to protein powder, so I was pleasantly surprised that I experienced no bloating or discomfort. I didn’t use it long enough to gain any weight, as that’s not my current goal, but I enjoyed every sip.

Price Per Serving

Mutant Mass is listed on the Mutant website for $44.99, though it’s regularly sold on Amazon for around $35. Using the standard four-scoop serving, the price per serving comes out to $4.24 with the Amazon pricing, or $5.62 if you purchase from Mutant, earning a 4-out-of-5 rating. This price per serving is high compared to standard proteins, but you’re paying extra for the carbs and fats. As far as mass gainers go, this is one of the most affordable options we’ve tested.

Formulation

When it comes to the formulation, Mutant Mass earns a 4-out-of-5 score. Each serving contains 56 grams of protein, along with 192 grams of carbs and 12 grams of fat. This is far more carbs and fats than most protein powders, but that’s very intentional.

The carbs and fats are sourced from whole foods, which have been processed into a powder form but are still good to see in the mix. Other mass gainers, like Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass, add carbohydrates from maltodextrin only, so it’s nice to see more carbs derived from food sources.

It’s interesting to see a blend of fast-digesting and slow-digesting protein sources in the whey and casein blend, and combined with the carbs and fats, this seems like it’s almost better as a meal replacement than a post-workout shake.

There are no added amino acids, but each serving naturally contains 26.1 g of EAAs and 12.2 g of BCAAs.

Taste and Solubility

For both taste and solubility, I’m giving Mutant Mass a 4.5-out-of-5 score. High, yes, but this protein deserves it. It mixes very smoothly for how many ingredients are in each serving, and the taste is delicious.

A hand holds up a shaker cup to show a Mutant Mass shake.

Now, I can’t speak for any Mutant Mass flavors besides Triple Chocolate, but I have used multiple flavors of Mutant’s whey isolate over the years and they were very tasty as well, so I’d imagine the other flavors of Mutant Mass also taste great.

Side Effects

When it comes to side effects, Mutant Mass scores a 5 out of 5. I fully expected to feel bloated and have stomach discomfort after drinking this, especially mixed with milk, but I didn’t experience any side effects at all. This mass gainer does contain lactose and gluten, so those with food sensitivities should be careful, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Even though I didn’t experience any issues, there are potential side effects of whey protein, including allergies, digestive issues, unwanted weight gain, or aggravation of existing medical conditions.

Third-Party Testing

When it comes to third-party testing, Mutant Mass earns a 4 out of 5. While they seem very transparent, they do have a few blends in their ingredient list. This isn’t a huge deal, but I did dock a point as they don’t disclose how much of each ingredient is used.

For example, the whey and casein blend of proteins contains six types of protein, but it’s not clear how much of each specific protein type is included.

Interestingly, Mutant doesn’t make bold claims on its sales pages about third-party testing, but if you dig into the Q&A on the website, you’ll find that Mutant sends many formulas to Informed Choice testing. I found Mutant Mass on the Informed Choice website and saw that Mutant tests about 11 to 12 batches per year.

Mutant Mass is more affordable and will be a better choice for most, though Dymatize Super Mass Gainer is a better choice for anyone who wants a gluten-free alternative. That’s because Mutant uses a blend of whole-food carbs along with maltodextrin, while Dymatize only uses maltodextrin.

Customer Experience

Mutant is a bit stricter than other brands with their return policy. You have 15 days to return your purchase, and you’ll need to request a return form from them first, as well as pay for your own shipping. Ordering from Amazon may be a better option, as they have better return policies and free shipping.

A bag of Mutant Mass rests alone.

If you do need to contact Mutant, they have an email address and phone number listed on the website, but with a pretty strict return policy, Mutant scores a 3-out-of-5 rating for the customer service experience.

Ordering Mutant Mass

If you order directly from Mutant, you’ll receive free shipping on orders over $99, and you can use ShopPay to checkout and split your order into four payments if you’d like. You can also order Mutant Mass from Amazon to take advantage of free shipping and a subscribe-and-save option, which is not offered directly by Mutant.

A few negative reviews mentioned they didn’t like the flavor, and had bloating and indigestion. However, reviews are still overwhelmingly positive, and people love the taste, texture, and results.

Final Verdict of Our Mutant Mass Review

By our scoring, Mutant Mass is one of the better mass gainers on the market. It’s priced well, tastes delicious, and regularly sends batches to Informed Choice for third-party testing.

While many mass gainers rely on simple carbohydrates like maltodextrin, Mutant Mass includes whole-food sources like oats, sweet potatoes, and barley starch, which is a nice touch.

Not everyone needs a mass gainer, but if you do, this is a very solid choice.

  • Contains a blend of whey and casein protein powders along with carbs and fats from whole foods, with great mixability that’s easy to digest.
  • We love to see regular third-party testing, especially for a product that’s priced to beat the competition.
  • Mutant Mass does contain gluten, which isn’t super common with protein powders, so be careful if you’re sensitive to gluten.

Mutant Mass: FAQs

Is Mutant Mass good for building muscle?

To build muscle, you need regular resistance training and adequate protein and calories. While Mutant Mass alone won’t build muscle, it can certainly help you take in enough protein and calories to recover and build muscle between workouts.

Is Mutant Mass better than Serious Mass?

Both Mutant Mass and Optimum Nutrition’s Serious Mass are meant to help gain weight, and both are quite popular. Mutant Mass contains more protein and fewer calories, while Serious Mass has more carbs and fewer fats, so choosing the right one is a matter of preference.

How often should you take Mutant Mass?

Mutant recommends using one or two servings of Mutant Mass per day if you’re looking to gain weight, though everyone’s nutritional needs and preferences are different, so you may require more or less than the recommended serving.

Is there anything bad about mass gainer?

One drawback of mass gainers is the high-calorie content. This is intentional, and most people using mass gainers are looking for more calories, but if you accidentally consume too many, you may end up gaining more body fat than you’d like.
