At GGR, we prioritize honesty and transparency, so let’s be upfront: The potential of the best testosterone booster options is intriguing, but their effectiveness remains inconclusive. They are also by no means a stand-in for medical advice or the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle.
That said, we’re not here to dampen your curiosity about questions like, “Does creatine increase testosterone?” or dismiss the exploration of other marketed boosters—there’s always something new to learn, after all; especially if you’re looking for the best supplements for men. However, we strongly advise you to proceed cautiously and consult a healthcare provider for guidance.
If the idea of today’s testosterone boosters excites you, come along with me, a registered dietitian, as I delve into the specifics of each product. Let’s get into it!
If you are a transmasculine athlete, these testosterone boosters are not designed with your specific needs in mind. Please consult a trans-affirming medical professional for your hormone replacement therapy needs. HRT is a therapeutic treatment that you might need whether you’re trans or cisgender. It’s overseen by a doctor and endocrinologist, and that is the safest way to alter your gender-related hormone levels. Testosterone boosters, on the other hand, are unregulated supplements designed for cisgender men wanting to help their bodies facilitate slightly more testosterone production or uptake.

The Truth About Testosterone
Before we open the chat on testosterone booster supplements, let’s first understand the facts about testosterone. To clarify, our focus is not on the synthetic anabolic steroid but instead on testosterone1 as the sex hormone naturally produced in the gonads—specifically, by Leydig cells in the testes for men and in the ovaries for women.
Testosterone is the primary sex hormone for males, playing a crucial role in their sexual development, although it is also produced in smaller quantities by women. As an androgen2, or male sex hormone, testosterone is vital for the development of male growth and masculine characteristics, including:
- Development of the testicles and penis
- Sperm production
- Libido
- Voice deepening
- Growth of facial and pubic hair
- Muscle strength and size
- Bone density and strength
In women3, healthy testosterone levels help maintain bone density, muscle mass, and cognitive functions. Testosterone also plays a role in sexual desire and arousal and regulates mood.
The production and regulation of testosterone involves a complex feedback loop, with most activity occurring during puberty into adulthood. Levels of testosterone progressively decline with age, particularly by age 30.1
The Low Down On Low T
Low testosterone (or “low T”) is often referred to as hypogonadism4, a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone. It’s characterized by serum testosterone levels of less than 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL) and attributed to certain medical conditions, stress, or issues with the pituitary gland or testicles.
Symptoms of low testosterone5 are mostly nonspecific, and some men may not notice symptoms at all. However, others may experience a decrease in testicular size, libido (sex drive), bone density, and muscle mass, among others.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is the primary treatment for hypogonadism, aiming to normalize testosterone levels and improve sexual function and well-being. Yet, research in the World Journal of Men’s Health6 shows about 88% of men with low testosterone don’t pursue treatment despite having access to healthcare.
Risks7 related to testosterone treatment—like infertility and breast enlargement—and concerns over substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) may contribute, pushing some towards alternative options like testosterone-boosting supplements.

There are no customer reviews but there is a 100% money-back guarantee if you don’t see results.
Testosil gets our top spot on this list due to its “excellent formulation with several proven testosterone-boosting ingredients at significant dosages,” according to GGR expert panelist Bob Iafelice, RDN. Among them is one of the top ashwagandha8 extracts according to Bob, KSM-66.
This testosterone booster claims to boost testosterone a whopping 434% more than just exercise alone, after conducting an eight-week trial. While we can’t attest to those stats, Testosil boasts 11 ingredients that aim to boost testosterone and are backed by research—including zinc, magnesium, fenugreek, vitamin B6, and D-aspartic acid.
In particular, some research9 also shows D-aspartic acid to have a significant role in regulating the release and synthesis of testosterone. Also, a 2023 systematic review10 emphasizes that zinc supplementation can effectively increase testosterone levels.
Speaking of zinc, that’s the one ingredient Bob wasn’t a fan of, not because of its effectiveness, but because of its dosage. “At 40 milligrams of zinc per serving, it’s fine to take on its own,” Bob explains. “However, if you’re taking other supplements with zinc in your supplement stack, this could put you over what I’d recommend a safe limit—about 50 milligrams.”
If you’re not taking zinc, this won’t be an issue, and Bob also adds that a little extra zinc is fine, as it’s depleted by stress. The price of $2.30 per serving is a bit steep, but you can bundle up multiple bottles to save.

Transparent Labs Vitality aims to optimize well-being and athletic performance by balancing hormone levels using various micronutrients and herbal ingredients.
RELATED: Transparent Labs LEAN Review
At the forefront of Vitality’s ingredient list is L-OptiZinc®, which combines zinc and methionine to enhance absorption. Zinc13 is essential for numerous bodily functions, and its deficiency is associated with hypogonadism in men. Boron14, another critical micronutrient, plays a vital role in hormone regulation and helps prevent vitamin D deficiencies linked to low testosterone levels.15
Vitality further incorporates branded Ayurvedic extracts—including ashwagandha8 (as KSM-66®), shilajit16 (as PrimaVie®), and Eurycoma longifolia17 (or tongkat ali as LJ100®)—for their potential roles in boosting testosterone, enhancing sexual function, and serving as aphrodisiacs.
The formula is enriched with 250 milligrams of quercetin18, a type of flavonoid found in plant foods that offers many health-promoting benefits, like protecting against cancer and lowering high blood pressure. A 2022 review19 suggests quercetin may improve male reproductive health.
Next is 125 milligrams of diindolylmethane20 (DIM), a compound produced in the body after consuming cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. Although DIM may reduce estrogen levels, it also possesses antiandrogen21 properties, which could block or suppress testosterone. However, evolving research22 indicates DIM may play a role in prostate cancer prevention and treatment.
The inclusion of BioPerine®, a patented black pepper extract23, helps maximize the bioavailability of these ingredients. One thing we appreciate most about Transparent Labs products is their exclusion of artificial ingredients and additives.
Transparent Labs’ Vitality is Informed Choice certified, indicating it has undergone third-party testing, meets international purity standards, and is free of banned substances. The latest third-party testing data for Vitality can be viewed on its product page.

Bottom Line
Testogen is a supplement with a transparent formula and 11 active ingredients. Testogen shares that their supplement helps users feel more energized, focused, stronger, healthier, and more confident. There are numerous positive customer reviews on the website.
Testogen is a testosterone booster that makes bold claims, including energy, mood, focus, and vitality improvements in as little as two weeks. It is marketed as having a 100% transparent formula—but let’s examine the 11 ingredients more closely.
The first ingredient is 2,352 milligrams of D-aspartic acid30, an amino acid found in central nervous and reproductive tissues. Although a 2023 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Impotence Research31 indicates DAA does not significantly increase total testosterone concentrations, some research9 supports its role in regulating the release and synthesis of LH and testosterone.
Testogen notes, “Because it plays such a vital role in testosterone production and is backed by strong evidence supporting its powerful testosterone-boosting effects, Testogen contains more D-AA per serving than any other product on the market.” However, it is worth noting that some evidence32 shows high D-aspartic acid doses, particularly up to 6 grams, can lower testosterone levels.
Testogen also includes 40 milligrams each of nettle leaf, fenugreek, and Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng) extracts. While research on the significance of nettle leaf and red ginseng on testosterone levels is lacking, fenugreek is among the most well-studied testosterone boosters. In a 2021 review33, virtually all studies indicate increased testosterone levels in healthy adults, yet researchers recommend further high-quality research.
The formula also contains various micronutrients—like zinc (10 milligrams), boron (8 milligrams), magnesium (200 milligrams), vitamin D3 (50 micrograms), vitamin K1 (20 micrograms), and vitamin B6 (20 milligrams)—to enhance hormone health and wellness. Its five milligrams of BioPerine may improve the absorption of this multi-ingredient formulation.
Testogen also offers Booster Drops formulated with herbal and natural ingredients, including Moringa oleifera and L-arginine, to enhance the effectiveness of Testogen capsules. However, despite Testogen’s claim of not using proprietary blends, the exact dosage for each ingredient in the drops is not disclosed.
Price | $2/serving, $54.99/container |
Key ingredients | D-aspartic acid, nettle leaf, fenugreek, red ginseng, zinc, boron, magnesium, vitamins D, K, and B6 |

Best Budget Testosterone Booster: Nutricost Testosterone Booster
Good for: Anyone seeking a simple blend of micronutrients and herbal ingredients
Best Budget
Nutricost Testosterone Booster
Pros & Cons
Bottom Line
At under 75 cents per serving, and sometimes cheaper than 50 cents, Nutricost Testosterone Booster is a budget-friendly way to get a boost in the hormone department. Yes, we’re usually skeptical of supplements that are this cheap but Nutricost has proven itself to be a reputable nutrition company.
Case and point, they use 100 milligrams of Long Jack Extract, which might seem small but studies have suggested that dose is beneficial in “enhancing testosterone production. Although more research is required before its use in clinical practice, this may represent a safe and promising therapeutic option, particularly for patients with hypogonadism.”
Hypogonadism is a condition where the body’s sex glands don’t produce sufficient hormones like testosterone.
You also get 15 milligrams of zinc, a mineral that’s directly correlated with testosterone levels, according to studies.

There are no customer reviews on the website, however, there is also a 100% money-back guarantee if you don’t see results.
Fenugreek11 is a legume with nearly 175 beneficial compounds, including protodioscin prominent in Forusap, that may improve body composition, muscle strength and endurance, and post-exercise recovery. A 2021 review12 further highlights fenugreek’s general efficacy in boosting testosterone in healthy adults, though the scientific community calls for further, high-quality research to build upon.
Since fenugreek has been claimed to be one of the most evidence-backed testosterone boosters available12, it makes sense to look for that in your testosterone booster. We recommend TestoPrime as our favorite booster with fenugreek. Along with the legume, registered dietitian Bob Iafelice notes that the product has several other significant ingredients in good dosages: KSM-66 ashwagandha, D-aspartic acid, zinc, and pomegranate.
“Pomegranate is an especially good ingredient to have,” Bob adds, “since recent research has shown that it can increase free testosterone levels.” Additionally, the booster is vegan-friendly and third-party tested—as we learned by contacting a sales representative.
One bottle of 30 servings can cost $65, which comes out to a price of $2.17 for each four-capsule serving. However, you can buy multiple bottles (up to five) and lower the price as low as $1.30 per serving, which is a great value compared to other testosterone boosters.

Bottom Line
The Ritual Essential for Men Multivitamin 18+ is a well reviewed multivitamin with quality ingredients. The only notable complaint was the mint flavoring.
Ritual Essential for Men Multivitamin is a subscription-based, scientifically formulated multivitamin tailored for men. While it’s not marketed as a testosterone booster, it contains vital micronutrients that support hormonal balance and overall health.
Including 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) of vitamin D3 is at the forefront, and observational studies26 link vitamin D deficiency with lower testosterone levels. Although there are no specific dosage recommendations for increasing testosterone, the daily tolerable limit for vitamin D27 is 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) per day. Moreover, research28 indicates that vitamin D3 is more effective at raising blood levels of vitamin D than vitamin D2.
In addition to vitamin D3, Ritual’s multivitamin incorporates other essential vitamins and minerals, such as zinc, magnesium, and boron, which play significant roles in testosterone synthesis. While direct evidence29 of these micronutrients enhancing testosterone levels through supplementation is limited, supplementing with them may be beneficial in cases of deficiency.
All ingredients in Ritual’s multivitamins are sourced from plant-based sources, making them suitable for men with various dietary preferences and lifestyles. We also appreciate Ritual’s commitment to its 30-day money-back guarantee, third-party testing, and traceable ingredients.

Best Testosterone Booster With DHEA: Legion Vitality

Best With DHEA
Legion Vitality Supplement
Product Highlights
- 100% natural vitality supplement in capsule form
- 4 active ingredients
- Legion Vitality listed benefits include: improving mood and hormone profile, supporting cognition, and decreasing fatigue and depressive symptoms
- Contains DHEA
Pros & Cons
Pros
- No artificial fillers, food dyes, or other chemical
- Third-party lab tested for purity
- “No return necessary” money-back guarantee
- Made in the United States in NSF-certified facilities

Cons
- Large serving size of 3 capsules
- Product is manufactured in facility that may also process allergens including milk, soy, wheat, and nuts
- Includes dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a banned substance in multiple sports organizations including NCAA, NFL, and WADA
Bottom Line
Legion Vitality is a natural supplement to improve vitality. The active ingredients are rhodiola rosea, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), bilberry extract, and vitamin B12. According to Legion, this supplement will improve mood and reduce stress related fatigue. However, this product is not right for competitive athletes as DHEA), is a banned substance by WADA, NCAA, the IOC, and NFL.
Legion is a trusted supplement brand due to its transparent formulations and scientific studies that match those on its site. We value Legion’s loyalty to third-party testing and showcasing certificates of analyses of its products, including its Vitality supplement.
Dehydroepiandrosterone39 (DHEA), a natural precursor to testosterone and estrogen that can also be synthesized for dietary supplements, may increase free testosterone levels in middle-aged men and prevent declines during high-intensity interval training (HIIT), according to one study40. In women, DHEA41 supplementation may improve sexual satisfaction, fertility, and age-related vaginal atrophy (the thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls).
However, DHEA supplementation is not without risks—it’s been linked to hirsutism (excessive hair growth), cardiovascular issues, hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), manic symptoms, prostate cancer, and other side effects.41 Plus, DHEA is prohibited in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
For those still considering Legion Vitality, it contains 150 milligrams of Rhodiola rosea.42 While research does not support Rhodiola rosea as a testosterone booster, it may enhance mental and physical performance, reduce fatigue and depression symptoms, increase work productivity, and offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Legion Vitality is also formulated with 1,500 milligrams of bilberry43, which may reduce inflammation and improve cognition, among other benefits. It also contains six micrograms of vitamin B1244, a water-soluble vitamin crucial to forming healthy red blood cells and maintaining energy levels.
Like all Legion supplements, Vitality has a generous “no return necessary” money-back guarantee. So if you don’t absolutely love it, you can request a full refund without filling out a form.

Best Testosterone Booster for Muscle Gain: Double Wood Tongkat Ali
Good for: Those looking for a third-party tested product to potentially boost athletic performance and build more muscle while maintaining bone health
Best For Muscle Gain
Double Wood Tongkat Ali Extract
Product Highlights
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Manufactured in a GMP-certified facility and third-party tested
- Non-GMO, soy-free, gluten-free, and vegan
- Budget -friendly at $0.42/serving
- 60 servings per bottle
Cons
- Amount of Tongkat Ali extract may be too much for some
- Ingredients need more scientific research
Bottom Line
Double Wood Tongkat Ali features 200:1 (1,000 mg) Tongkat Ali extract dosage and 20 mg of Tribulus terrestris fruit extract per two-capsule serving. Each bottle has 60 servings, which equals about $0.42 per budget-friendly serving. Double Wood products are manufactured in a GMP-certified facility and third-party tested with a viewable certificate of analysis. It’s also non-GMO, soy-free, gluten-free, and vegan.
Double Wood Tongkat Ali is an ultra budget-friendly test booster featuring just two ingredients: 1,000 milligrams of Tongkat Ali extract and 20 milligrams of Tribulus terrestris in each two-capsule serving.
Tongkat Ali—aka Eurycoma Longifolia Jack or longjack for short—has been studied for its muscle-building effects when combined with a regular resistance training regimen. Further, a 2019 study in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine34 surveying 40 young males over eight weeks found that Tongkat Ali supplementation had a positive outcome for peak power output, especially in the lower limbs (knee flexion). More research is needed to equate muscle gain with this particular ingredient, as some studies have reported no effects when longjack was combined with regular training.
As for Tribulus terrestris, the trouble with Tribulus—you’re welcome, Star Trek fans—is that it doesn’t technically build more muscle as some manufacturers claim, but could help alleviate some muscle damage and promote anaerobic performance35. As you may know, you have to break down muscle to build it back up. So the sooner you’re recovered and back in the gym, the sooner you can keep courting those #gains.
Double Wood Tongkat Ali is non-GMO, soy-free, gluten-free, and vegan. It’s also manufactured in a GMP-certified facility and is third-party tested with a viewable certificate of analysis. And, at about $0.42 per serving, it can fit most budgets.
One item of note is the high amount of Tongkat Ali extract per serving (1,000 mg). The Double Wood website shares that this is half the upper limit of 2,000 milligrams per day, but according to some research, this amount can still be considered high based on your body weight. Most of this research has been conducted on animals17, so more human research is necessary to reach a consensus on an upper limit. If this concerns you, we suggest starting with a half dose of one capsule to gauge your tolerance and, of course, consulting with your doctor for approval.
Dr. Bob cosigns on the brand, saying, “Double Wood is a good company. It’s third-party tested, GMP certified, and uses capsules and powders, which [can be] more reliable than tablets.” However, he felt the amount of Tongkat Ali and Tribulus may not be as potent and, therefore, suitable for those with medical issues. Regardless, check with your doctor before using.

Best With Tongkat Ali
Momentous Tongkat Ali
Product Highlights
- Herbal supplement to support hormone metabolism
- Also known as Eurycoma longifolia

- Ships to over 200 countries

Cons
- Limited reviews
- Single active ingredient

Bottom Line
Momentous Tongkat Ali is an herbal supplement. According to Momentous, this supplement can improve hormone activity and athletic performance. There are limited, but mostly positive, reviews.
Momentous offers simplicity with a single potent ingredient: 400 milligrams of tongkat ali. Research45 suggests properly standardized extracts of tongkat ali may improve hormonal health, mood, and overall well-being.
Eurycomanone, a major quassinoid in Eurycoma longifolia, appears to increase testosterone production. One study45 explains tongkat ali’s effectiveness in restoring normal testosterone levels is not so much due to stimulating testosterone synthesis directly, but rather by increasing the rate of free testosterone release from its binding hormone, sex-hormone-binding-globulin (SHBG).
Standardized extracts of tongkat ali, with a high concentration of quassinoids (including 20% eurycomanone), may also inhibit estrogen production by targeting the aromatase enzyme, which converts testosterone into estrogen.17 While Momentous does not specify the standardization of its extract, evidence17 supports a daily dosage range of 200 to 400 milligrams for men, consistent with its 400-milligram serving.
Momentous tongkat ali is third-party tested by Informed Sport, ensuring it’s free from banned substances, contaminants, and harmful ingredients. This independent verification offers reassurance regarding supplement safety and purity, especially for athletes subject to drug testing.

Best Testosterone Booster With HMB: Optimum Nutrition HMB
Good for: Individuals seeking a clinically-dosed formula to improve athletic performance, muscle recovery, and hormone balance
Best With HMB
Optimum Nutrition HMB Caps
Product Highlights
- Calcium Beta-hydroxybutyrate Beta-methylbutyrate Monohydrate supplement
- Also known as HMB
- Supports improved muscle strength
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Affordable at less than $1.50 per serving
- Contains 3 grams of pure HMB
Cons
- Large servings size of 3 capsules
- Contains gelatin
- Limited reviews
- Customers report the capsule is large
Bottom Line
Optimum Nutrition HMB Capsules contain 3 grams of pure HMB, the only active ingredient. HMB is a metabolite of leucine, an amino acid. This supplement is designed to help support improvements in muscle strength. Some customers complained the large capsule was difficult to swallow.
Optimum Nutrition HMB is a clinically dosed, single-ingredient formula that delivers 3 grams of β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB). Although it’s not explicitly marketed as a testosterone booster, the supplement may positively influence exercise performance and hormone levels.
β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a natural compound produced during the breakdown of the amino acid leucine. A 2022 review48 highlights HMB can minimize muscle breakdown induced by exercise while potentially enhancing strength, muscle mass, and overall exercise performance.
Further support comes from a 2022 meta-analysis49, which suggests that HMB supplementation can reduce cortisol levels in resistance exercises and increase testosterone levels in combined aerobic and anaerobic activities. Despite calls from researchers for further studies involving a more comprehensive range of doses and exercises and inclusive of all genders, the consistent study of a 3-gram dose aligns with Optimum Nutrition HMB’s formulation.
RELATED: Optimum Nutrition Creatine Review
While Optimum Nutrition is recognized for its reputation and label transparency, it’s important to note the absence of third-party testing for its HMB product. Additionally, the capsules contain gelatin, making them unsuitable for vegan consumers.

Best Testosterone Booster Recommended by an RD: Life Extension Testosterone Elite
Good for: Those aiming to balance hormones and enhance muscle growth with a single capsule
Best Recommended by an RD
Life Extension Testosterone Elite
Product Highlights
- Capsule supplement to promote healthy levels of testosterone
- Active ingredients: Tesnor and luteolin
- Life Extension lists benefits as promoting healthy testosterone levels and supporting physical strength
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Gluten free, non-GMO, and vegetarian
- Serving size is 1 capsule
- Certificate of Analysis available for all products that verify ingredients on label
Cons
- Only available in 1 flavor: pomegranate
- Less active ingredients than similar products—only two
Bottom Line
Life Extension Testosterone Elite is a supplement that helps promote healthy testosterone levels. The supplement helps to support physical strength and other benefits of healthy testosterone levels.
Registered dietitian Bob Iafelice says Life Extension Testosterone Elite was the only testosterone booster he’s tried that actually increased his testosterone levels, as indicated by blood work, so we had to check it out for ourselves.
Life Extension Testosterone Elite claims to promote healthy testosterone production and support physical strength by combining a patented blend of pomegranate and cacao extracts with luteolin. It specifically features 400 milligrams of Tesnor®—a proprietary blend comprising cocoa bean (Theobroma cacao) and pomegranate peel (Punica granatum)—and 275 milligrams of luteolin.
According to its sales sheet, clinical studies reveal Tesnor® significantly increases free and total testosterone, supports muscle strength and growth, and helps improve age-related symptoms. A deeper dive into studies related to Theobroma cacao and Punica granatum, notably a 2022 human clinical trial46 in healthy young males, reveals Tesnor’s manufacturer funds them. Although these ingredients could have merit, the results should be considered preliminary.
Luteolin is a flavonoid believed to block the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into estrogen and has garnered interest for its potential to enhance androgen production. However, research47 supporting its efficacy is predominantly based on animal studies.
Inconclusive data aside, Testosterone Elite boasts certifications for being non-GMO and gluten-free, is manufactured in the USA, and comes with a Certificate of Analysis for each batch produced. It’s also worth noting that the manufacturer warns that exposure to heat or sunlight may melt or damage the product; therefore, customers are advised to be present during delivery to ensure proper product handling.

Cons
- Slightly pricey
Bottom Line
Prime Male Testosterone Booster is an all-natural, third-party tested supplement with research-backed doses of key ingredients.
Prime Male is a multi-ingredient formula that received two thumbs up from registered dietitian Bob Iafelice. Its formula combines well-known micronutrients—such as vitamin D3 (4,000 IU), vitamin K2 (45 mcg), magnesium (100 mg), zinc (30 mg), and boron (5 mg)—with distinctive herbal ingredients to support hormone health, energy, and muscle growth.
“Many people lack K2,” Iafelice says. “This is a nice addition for any supplement.”
Our first ingredient of interest is 120 milligrams of Korean ginseng, an herbal adaptogen promoted to improve mood, exercise performance, cognition, and immunity. A 2023 review36 supports ginseng’s benefits for men’s hormone health, although further research is encouraged to understand its role in improving erectile function.
“The luteolin is great for inhibiting aromatase (reducing conversion of testosterone to estrogen),” Iafelice explains. You’ll get 60 milligrams of that compound. Researchers37 confirm it can be used to inhibit estrogen production, though it’s unclear how it does it.
“Overall, I think it’s as good, or better, than any other T-booster on the market,” Iafelice adds.
It’s third-party tested, and while it’s a bit pricey Iafelice remarks that it’s competitively priced for being a well-formulated testosterone supplement.

Other Testosterone Boosters We Researched
In our quest to identify the top choices, we also researched and evaluated the following:
We haven’t personally tested any of the above, but once we do, we’ll update this roundup. Additionally, consider exploring the best vitamin D and magnesium supplements, as deficiencies in these micronutrients are associated with low testosterone levels.
What Are Testosterone Boosters?
Testosterone boosters, not to be confused with testosterone therapy, are generally supplements that you can purchase over the counter or online with the marketed effect of raising overall testosterone levels. They often contain ingredients like vitamins, minerals, and herbs meant to counteract the symptoms of low testosterone.
Common Testosterone Booster Supplement Ingredients
- Ashwagandha: An Ayurvedic (natural medicine) plant most commonly used for stress.
- D-Aspartic acid: An amino acid that’s present in both the endocrine and central nervous system (CNS).
- DHEA: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland.
- Fenugreek: An herb used in alternative medicine and cooking.
- Ginseng: A product of the roots of the Panax ginseng plant.
- HMB: Hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) is a chemical produced when the body breaks down leucine for protein synthesis.
- Maca: Occasionally called Peruvian ginseng, maca is another root.
- Magnesium: An essential mineral that’s important for health but can’t be produced by the body on its own.
- Saw palmetto: An herbal palm extract.
- Shilajit: A natural substance made from plant, mineral, and animal materials found in high mountain ranges.
- Tongkat Ali: The product of an herbal flowering plant.
- Tribulus terrestris: An annual plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
- Vitamin D: A fat soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb essential minerals.
- Zinc: An essential mineral naturally present in red meat, poultry, and fish.
Natural Testosterone Boosters
Testosterone-boosting supplements can be very handy, but there are a few methods for naturally increasing testosterone levels, such as:
- Engaging in a regular exercise regimen of resistance training and HIIT
- Getting plenty of high-quality sleep
- Eating a well-balanced diet of protein, fats, and carbs. (What Should My Macros Be?) Also, eating foods high in zinc and magnesium, like meats, spinach, and nuts
- Lowering your stress levels
- Reducing your alcohol intake
How We Picked and Tested the Best Testosterone Boosters
Navigating the world of testosterone boosters presents a unique challenge: There is no official standardization for the ingredients they should contain, unlike whey protein powder, where expectations are clear. Despite this, we leaned on our GGR supplement testing methodology to pick and test the best testosterone boosters:
- Formulations: Although more research on testosterone boosters is needed, we included and emphasized supplements with the most scientifically backed components, like ashwagandha and vitamin D.
- Cost: We feature products across various price points to accommodate various budgets.
- Third-party testing: We always prioritize products that undergo third-party testing to ensure safety and quality.
- Brand reputation: Because a product is only as good as its brand, we evaluate its reputation through metrics such as customer reviews and return policies.
Benefits of Testosterone Boosters
Testosterone boosters are marketed as a natural way to increase testosterone levels. Theoretically, this could enhance the effects of testosterone and alleviate symptoms associated with hypogonadism, such as:
- Improving erectile dysfunction and sex drive
- Enhancing athletic performance
- Increasing lean muscle mass and strength
- Reducing body fat
- Improving bone mineral density
Additionally, specific ingredients commonly found in testosterone boosters may offer benefits on their own, including the best ashwagandha supplements for stress relief and exercise recovery. However, little evidence supports the most popular components in testosterone boosters for increasing testosterone levels.27
Dr. Jeremie Walker, MD, a longevity expert at Opt Health, shares this view. He tells us:
“The above retail testosterone boosters are all after the same end game: higher total and free testosterone levels. And many of them have a common thread: the list of ingredients. We see that most of the T-boosting supplements found over the counter focus on a handful of ingredients favored by nutritional science to support balanced hormone levels. You notice that none of them directly claim to raise testosterone because of the FDA criteria around structure and function labeling claims.
On review, we see many testosterone boosters carrying a mix of zinc, ashwagandha, boron, and Shilajit. Some others to notice are Tongkat Ali, Fodogia Agretis, and BioPerine. Could one marginally benefit from some of these? Possibly, but where most people go wrong is they don’t test their T level to get a baseline and follow up with a repeat T-level, say 3 months later to see if there was a change from said baseline.
What we have to be mindful of are all the other lifestyle optimization interventions one will go through while taking a mixed supplement. So, was it the supplement or merely the focus on nutrition, sleep, and exercise? I would argue the latter.
Of importance here is that hormone levels change day to day, given the myriad of stressors and life conditions we throw at ourselves. I have seen guys have serial T checks over several weeks, and the T level is higher or lower by up to 100 points! I consider this a normal variation. Clinically, I have yet to see these alleged t-boosting supplements have sustainable or meaningful impacts on boosting testosterone.”
Dosing and Interactions
The dosing and potential interactions of testosterone boosters can vary significantly depending on their ingredients. For instance, fenugreek may interact with antidiabetic medications, potentially lowering blood sugar levels to a dangerous range.
We recommend consulting a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking medications. A doctor can assess whether your symptoms are related to low testosterone or if they stem from a different condition and offer personalized advice for achieving hormonal balance and overall health.
Third-Party Testing
The FDA does not tightly regulate dietary supplements, so we advise selecting products with third-party testing. For competitive athletes, it’s vital to choose supplements free of banned substances, such as those certified by Informed Choice and Informed Sport.
Buying Guide: What to Look for in Testosterone Boosters
When selecting a natural testosterone booster, keep the following considerations in mind:
- Well-studied ingredients: Opt for ingredients with the most robust research support, like zinc and tongkat ali, and exercise caution with proprietary blends that do not disclose specific ingredients and doses.
- Optimal dosages: Research on testosterone supplement dosing guidelines is scarce, so we highly recommend doing your due diligence on safe and effective dosages. Be mindful of potential overlaps, like vitamin D in your multivitamin, to avoid excessive intake.
- Usage guidelines: Make sure the supplement aligns with your daily routine. For example, JYM ZMA is recommended for nighttime use, whereas some products encourage taking with food for optimal results.
- Dietary restrictions: Account for dietary restrictions, such as requiring a gluten-free product, to ensure the supplement suits your needs.
- Third-party testing: Without FDA regulation for supplements, prioritize products verified by third-party organizations.
FAQs About Testosterone Boosters
