While Alo Moves checks all of these boxes, our expert tester spent plenty of time exploring the app and trying a variety of workout classes, carefully noting the good and bad to see if it lived up to its claims.

In this Alo Moves review, I’ll share our honest thoughts based on hands-on testing and help you decide if this home fitness app is worth considering.

A Quick Look at Alo Moves

Alo Moves is a workout app created by Alo, a premium fitness apparel company. This subscription-based app is designed to help users improve their overall health and wellness through a large library of fitness classes, mindfulness exercises, meditation, self-care rituals, and more. 

We love that Alo Moves includes plenty of options for mindfulness and meditation, practices that may help decrease stress and reduce blood pressure1

While many popular workout apps place a heavy focus on strength training, hypertrophy, and fat loss for a traditional gym setting, Alo takes a gentler approach. That doesn’t mean the workouts are easy, but they’re meant to simulate the experience of being in a fitness studio, rather than a hardcore gym.

Many think of yoga when they think of Alo, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. In addition to classes in a variety of yoga styles, including Hatha, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Vinyasa, and more, Alo Moves has programs focused on barre, Pilates, core work, running, and more.

On the wellness side, users can access guided mindfulness classes that include meditation, breathwork, and reiki, along with plenty of virtual classes that focus on self-care practice. 

If you’re looking for a well-rounded approach to health and wellness, Alo Moves is a great app to consider. 

Before You Buy

  • Alo Moves provides a large library of on-demand workout classes with great instruction, but there’s no accountability or interaction with instructors. 
  • At the time of writing, Alo Moves has been removed from the Google Play store and is only available on Apple devices. 
  • Alo Moves costs $12.99 per month, but users can take advantage of a free 14-day trial before committing to a membership. 

Is Alo Moves Worth It?

Alo Moves is packed with workouts and priced to fit most budgets, but that doesn’t mean it’s a must-have for all users. Here’s who we think would be a great fit, as well as who should consider a different app.

Great for:

  • Yoga, Pilates, and bodyweight fitness enthusiasts.
  • Those who want to experience a studio fitness class from the comfort of their home.
  • iPhone/iOS users who primarily use Apple Devices.

Not recommended for:

  • Anyone looking for accountability and group interaction within an app.
  • Those who primarily want to focus on strength training and muscle growth. 
  • People who use Android phones.

Workout Experience with Alo Moves

Frieda Johnson, CNC, ISSA-SET, tried several workouts within Alo Moves, including both yoga and Pilates. As an experienced yoga practitioner, Frieda knows how to recognize good instruction when she sees it, and overall, she was impressed by the Alo experience.

After setting up her account, Frieda was prompted to take a short quiz to learn her workout preferences and experience levels, which the app used to recommend classes. This is a nice feature, but it didn’t show Frieda all of the categories she selected, so she had to manually search for other classes she wanted to try.

That said, once she found the classes she wanted, she was very impressed with both the instruction and overall workout experience.

“I really enjoyed the classes I did,” Frieda says. “I like that I was able to filter by class type, duration, and difficulty (among other things). I also liked that I could control the music volume or turn it off completely separately from the overall video volume.” 

Pricing and Subscription Options

Alo Moves costs $12.99 per month, earning 4 out of 5 stars for pricing. It’s not the cheapest workout app we’ve tested, but it’s pretty close, and we feel the value is worth the monthly fee. 

For those who are on the fence, Alo Moves offers a free 14-day trial. This is a great way to test the app and see if you like it before committing to a membership–just be sure to cancel your subscription before the trial ends if you don’t want to pay for a plan.

App Setup and Ease of Use

Frieda was very impressed with the app setup process, giving it 5 out of 5 stars. She noted that it’s a quick process, and Alo Moves uses a quiz to ask about your interests and skill levels so the app can provide customized class recommendations. 

It’s worth noting that after Frieda took this quiz, the app only recommended classes from the two of the categories she chose. She had to manually search for other classes to try, even though she selected more than two categories during her sign-up quiz. 

However, while using the app once you’re signed up is still relatively easy, it’s not perfect and earns 4 out of 5 stars.

“The workouts are easy to follow, and the instructors do a good job of explaining what you’ll need before you start,” says Frieda. “The app is mostly easy to use, but it is sometimes hard to find things, and all of the workout descriptions make it sound like they are part of a series even when they’re not.”

Accountability and Instruction

While this is a workout app, you won’t receive the accountability you might expect from a personal trainer or group fitness program, so Alo Moves earns 1.5 out of 5 stars for accountability. Frieda noted that there is a place to switch on notifications, but she didn’t receive workout reminders or any other notifications. 

While you may not be receiving much accountability from this app, the instruction is excellent and earns 4 out of 5 stars. 

“The workouts are easy to follow, and the instructors do a good job of explaining what you’ll need before you start, as well as explaining each move thoroughly as you do it,” explains Frieda. “All of the classes I’ve tried did an excellent job of providing plenty of information about how to perform the moves, as well as form cues and additional tips. There is a video with a trainer verbally explaining what to do while demonstrating.”

Equipment Demands and Workout Variety

The last thing you want to do is sign up for an app that requires equipment you don’t have, but thankfully, that’s not the case with Alo Moves, which earns 5 out of 5 stars for equipment demands.

Most of the workouts are bodyweight only (though you may want to have a yoga mat), and the classes that do use equipment typically have low requirements, like a pair of dumbbells, a resistance band, or a kettlebell

With these minimal equipment requirements, the workout variety also earns 4 out of 5, providing plenty to choose from. 

However, Frieda says the app makes it seem like there’s more variety than is actually available once you start browsing. The app allows you to filter the classes by fitness level and workout style, but you won’t always find results for your chosen filters.

“There are no beginner-level dance classes, and the only gym classes are one beginner-level series and one intermediate series,” says Frieda. “But, if you want to try a range of practices, like different types of yoga, dance, Pilates, handstand training, and meditation, then this app has a lot of variety.”

Bottom Line

Asana Rebel is a yoga and wellness app designed to help you reach your fitness goals. It offers yoga-inspired workouts that require minimal equipment, healthy recipes, and sleep and meditation information. However, the app does not offer a free trial or free version and is more expensive than competitors. Customers also shared in reviews that it was difficult to cancel the subscription.

If you’re looking for a similar app that takes the intensity up a level, Asana Rebel is a great choice. 

While Alo Moves focuses on wellness and mindfulness, Asana Rebel uses a more fast-paced, high-intensity approach. It’s still based primarily on yoga and bodyweight exercises, but many of the classes move pretty quickly, even the classes meant for beginners. 

Like Alo Moves, Asana Rebel also provides mindfulness classes, providing a well-rounded health and wellness experience. The primary difference is in the classes themselves. 

If you’re looking for a traditional studio experience, Alo Moves is the better choice and received a higher overall score based on Frieda’s testing. However, if you prefer shorter classes that are a bit higher in intensity, you may want to consider Asana Rebel instead.

Alo Moves earns 3 out of 5 stars for the customer support experience. 

There’s a 14-day free trial available, so you’re able to try it out for two weeks before making a commitment, but there are no refunds if you decide to purchase a membership and want to end early. Cancellation is also slightly confusing, as you’ll need to log in to your account on the website and won’t be able to cancel from within the app.

At the time of writing, Alo Moves is only available on iOS devices, but it’s quite well-received, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars based on over 27,000 reviews. 

Most users love the app, though some report technical difficulties and confusion with the class filtering options, which Frieda also encountered. 

Final Verdict of Our Alo Moves Review

If you’re looking for a high-quality fitness app that provides a variety of yoga, Pilates, strength, and meditation classes, along with self-care tips, Alo Moves is a great choice. The instruction is fantastic, and there are plenty of classes to choose from. 

There’s not much when it comes to community or accountability, and browsing by category is a little confusing, but those are our main callouts. For those who want to enjoy studio-quality classes from the comfort of their home, Alo Moves is well worth a try. 

  • This app is great for those who want to focus on all aspects of fitness and wellness, but those primarily focused on strength training and hypertrophy will want to choose a different app.
