There is currently only one flavor option for this protein powder: vanilla. GGR’s Head of Content and certified personal trainer Kate Meier has used Ritual protein about a dozen times, and she gives it a 4 out of 5 for taste. “I tried this in a blender cup with water, and in a smoothie with strawberries and blueberries. Even just with water, this has a nice taste. Pea protein is considered a complete protein, meaning it has all the essential amino acids. However, as Amanda Capritto, GGR senior writer and certified sports nutrition coach points out, peas are very low in the amino acid methionine. Fortunately, Ritual has added 493 milligrams of l-methionine to balance out that deficiency.

One thing Kate noted is the closing mechanism on the bag. “It’s almost like a Velcro, and the protein gets stuck in it and makes it hard to seal,” she says.

While we’re well-versed in whey and plant-based protein powders, Naked Nutrition’s Naked Egg protein is a relatively new one for us to crack. But as you can already guess, it’s an egg-cellent low-carb source of protein.
Competitive weightlifter and GGR head of content Kate Meier ended up giving this keto-safe protein powder a 3 out of 5 on taste, but only because she didn’t detect any “egg” flavor—which is a good thing. “First, I blended this with strawberries, banana, and Lactaid. You can taste a flavor there; it’s hard to pinpoint what it is. It’s almost like the egg protein muted the strawberry and banana flavor. Then I tried it with a cup of hot, black coffee, which I threw in the blender, making the coffee a little frothy. I actually liked it better this way! The strong coffee taste covers a lot of the egg taste.”
Naked Nutrition’s egg white protein powder provides 25 grams of protein per 2-scoop serving sourced by non-GMO chicken eggs. Egg white protein is also considered a complete protein source and is rich in all essential amino acids, including branched-chain amino acids—5.6 grams per serving, to be eggs-act.

Transparent Labs has just 2 grams of carbs, and we love the ingredient profile it offers people looking to add collagen to their diet. It provides 11 grams sourced from grass-fed bovine cattle. Sydney Lappe, registered dietitian, points out that it is a good source of types I and III collagen, which are useful in fighting the signs of aging like wrinkly skin, muscle aches, joint pain, and muscle aches.
Collagen4 is the most abundant protein in the body and is found in the bone, skin, muscles, tendons, cartilage, nails, and other organs. It is used to make connective tissue and acts like glue, connecting other tissues and aiding in their resiliency. Collagen protein is mostly sourced from animal products that contain connective tissue—like animal meat and fish. It’s also formulated into supplements as collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen.
There are two flavors Transparent Labs offers: Chocolate, and Unflavored. Amanda Capritto, GGR staff writer and competitive triathlete, tried the Transparent Labs chocolate-flavored collagen a few different ways. She recommends mixing it with something other than water. “It’s not bad, but it kind of tastes like watered down chocolate milk (when mixed with water). I also mixed it with almond milk which significantly improved the taste!”
In terms of solubility: “It dissolves so well, it’s scary!” Amanda says, giving it a perfect 5-out-of-5 rating here. “It doesn’t feel grainy and I didn’t even notice any chunks when mixed with plain water. The stuff is virtually unnoticeable when mixed with another powder, like protein powder.”
However, it’s important to note that collagen is not considered a complete protein because it doesn’t contain all nine essential amino acids—explicitly lacking tryptophan. This reinforces the concept of supplements, which are used to supplement a balanced diet: You’ll still need to obtain a variety of high-protein foods to ensure you’re nourishing your body with all essential amino acids.
Also despite the popularity of collagen, the research is mixed regarding its value since it’s so widely abundant in the body. But some research supports collagen’s benefit on skin and joint health, including in athletes.
According to a 2021 meta-analysis published in Amino Acids5, collagen peptide supplementation is most beneficial in improving joint functionality and reducing joint pain with some improvements in body composition, strength, and muscle recovery. However, despite elevating collagen synthesis rates when supplemented with 15 grams per day, it does not significantly impact muscle protein synthesis compared to higher-quality protein sources.
