Finding the best greens powder can be a challenge, and understandably so. These supplements may appear to be made simply from leafy greens at first glance, but you’ll quickly find that many of these powder supplements—just like the best protein powders—are a bit more complicated.

Depending on the brand, you might see probiotics, digestive enzymes, supplemental micronutrients, fruit-based extracts, green tea, prebiotic fibers, and even adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms, all added to boost the health and wellness claims of these products.

Organifi Green Juice and Athletic Greens “AG1” are two popular greens powders that illustrate just how different the ingredient lists for these supplements can be.

In this article, our nutrition experts, Amanda Capritto, NASM-CNC, and Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC, analyzed each product in terms of flavor, solubility, formulation, third-party testing, and company policies to help you see how they compare. As a registered dietitian, I’ve added my own insights on the high-quality ingredients, effectiveness, and potential health benefits of Organifi vs Athletic Greens.

Quick Look: Organifi vs Athletic Greens

One of the first things that sticks out when looking at a package of greens powder is the extensive ingredient list. While all of these supplements contain powdered edible grasses, algae, or green leafy vegetables, brands often add “superfoods” and other ingredients for additional super greens powder benefits.

Athletic Greens and Organifi both use a combination of isolated extracts and powders made from whole food sources. The formulation for Athletic Greens, however, is more extensive.

Below are some key considerations to keep in mind when deciding between these two products.

Who Should Buy Organifi Green Juice

  • People on a tighter budget
  • Those for whom digestive enzymes and probiotics aren’t a big priority
  • Anyone who prefers certified USDA-organic ingredients

Who Should Buy Athletic Greens

  • Those who value additional antioxidant-rich ingredients
  • People wanting a supplemental source of vitamins and minerals
  • Anyone wanting a variety of adaptogens

Key Similarities Between Organifi and Athletic Greens

  • Contain blends of edible grasses and algae
  • Sweetened with non-caloric natural sweeteners; no artificial sweeteners
  • Contain the adaptogen ashwagandha
  • Third-party tested
  • Non-GMO and free from glyphosate residues
  • Plant-based and gluten-free

Important Differences Between Organifi and Athletic Greens

  • Athletic Greens contains additional antioxidants, adaptogens, digestive enzymes, and probiotics
  • Athletic Greens contains two types of functional mushrooms
  • Organifi has more flavor options
  • Organifi contains less vitamins and minerals
  • Organifi costs about 20% less than AG1

Formulation: Organifi vs Athletic Greens

The formulation was the biggest differentiator when we compared these two brands. Because greens powders are best used as an additional source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, we prefer to see blends with fruit-, veggie-, and herb-based ingredients that provide a variety of different antioxidants and polyphenols.

We also prefer formulations that rely heavily on whole food-based powders over extracts, as these provide combinations of nutrients closer to what you’d get from whole foods.

Overall, Athletic Greens does a much better job of meeting these criteria. Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC, rated the formulation a 5 out of 5. Besides including a lot of whole food-sourced powders, it also contains:

  • 7.2 billion CFUs of probiotic bacteria
  • Multiple adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms
  • Bromelain (a digestive enzyme)
  • Supplemental beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin A, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc

Will every one of these ingredients make a huge difference in your overall health? Probably not. For example, we don’t have much evidence on whether probiotics significantly improve digestive health in healthy people, and digestive enzymes typically aren’t necessary for people without malabsorptive disorders.

A note of caution: Athletic Greens contains over 13,000% of the daily value for biotin—that’s a lot! If taken two or more times a day, that’s enough biotin to interfere with diagnostic tests1 for heart failure, heart attacks, and thyroid function.

Organifi, on the other hand, got a 2.75 out of 5 rating from Amanda Capritto, NASM-CNC. “It seems to have fewer whole food ingredients than many other organic greens powders I’ve tried, and I’m not a fan of the proprietary blends. For me, the quality of the formulation isn’t enough to justify the price point,” she said.

It does contain ashwagandha as an adaptogen, but there’s a notable lack of probiotics.

One of my main concerns with these greens powders (and most other brands) is that it’s almost impossible to tell how much total greens you’re actually getting. They’re usually combined with other “superfood” extracts in vague proprietary blends.

Overall, though, both brands can be great sources of additional nutrients for people who struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables or whose diets are inconsistent due to busy schedules or travel.

Taste and Solubility: Organifi vs Athletic Greens

We get it—drinking a glass of vegetables and grasses doesn’t exactly sound that appetizing. Many can have an earthy or minty taste. Our testers, however, loved the taste of both mixes and rated each a 4.5 out of 5.

Nicole loved AG1’s fruity flavor. “There’s only one flavor option, but you don’t really need any others since the original is so good. It has a mild grassy flavor, of course, but I was mainly hit by some very pleasant notes of pineapple and vanilla,” said Nicole.

Amanda was equally impressed with the Crisp Apple flavor from Organifi, saying: “It reminded me a lot of a tart, tangy green apple. I liked it much better than most of the other greens powders I’ve tested, at least in terms of flavor.”

Neither powder dissolved perfectly when mixed with water, but our testers were still impressed. According to Amanda, “Organifi Green Juice mixes up really well. I only noticed a tiny amount of settling at the bottom of the glass, but no chunks of powder at all.” She gave it a 4.5 out of 5 for solubility.

Settling was more of an issue with Athletic Greens, although it mixed up well at first. “Just be aware that if you like to sip your greens slowly or get interrupted before you finish a glass, you’ll definitely have to stir it up again,” said Nicole, rating the solubility a 4 out of 5.

Organifi vs Athletic Greens: Third-Party Testing

Because dietary supplements aren’t regulated as strictly as food or pharmaceuticals2 in the United States, it’s difficult to tell how safe they are unless the brand submits them for testing by independent labs. Fortunately, Organifi and Athletic Greens are both third-party tested.

Athletic Greens had a slight edge over Organifi with a perfect 5 out of 5 rating. AG1 is NSF Certified for Sport, one of the most trustworthy third-party testing certifications available that tests for the presence of dangerous substances banned by major athletic organizations. They also verify that the contents match the product label.

Organifi received a 4.75 out of 5 rating from Amanda. “I was impressed that Organifi tests their greens powder for contaminants and posts the results online, but their use of vague proprietary blends is frustrating. The brand says they have a commitment to transparency but doesn’t list the amount of each ingredient,” she said.

Company Policies: Organifi vs Athletic Greens

When looking for customer-friendly policies, you can’t go wrong with either of these brands.

Athletic Greens and Organifi both received 4.5 out of 5 stars from our testers for customer service. According to Nicole, “I was really impressed by their 90-day refund policy for first-time customers. They’ll send you a full refund for any reason as long as you mail the product back to them. I also noticed many customers praising the customer service team, who addressed subscription issues quickly and replaced damaged items at no extra charge.”

Customers must be happy with the product and service, considering the 4.5-star rating from over 33,000 reviews on the Athletic Greens website.

Organifi supports its customers by offering a limited money-back guarantee and refunds within 60 days of purchasing, minus shipping costs. Like Athletic Greens, their customers rate the product very highly at 4.8 stars from 148 reviews on the Organifi website.

Organifi vs Athletic Greens: Final Thoughts

To summarize our experience, both Organifi and Athletic Greens are excellent options for people who want an additional source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals on top of an already balanced diet or who struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables. That said, they aren’t a true replacement for whole fruits and veggies.

If you’re on a tighter budget and don’t need all the bells and whistles that come with Athletic Greens, Organifi Green Juice will probably meet your needs just fine. On the other hand, AG1 offers more micronutrients, adaptogens, “superfood” extracts, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, which many people prefer to have in their super greens.

Organifi vs Athletic Greens: FAQs

Is Organifi as good as Athletic Greens?

This depends on what you want from your greens powder. Organifi provides a boost of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals from powdered fruits and vegetables. However, Athletic Greens contains additional micronutrients, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and adaptogens.

Organifi green juice provides a boost of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals from the green superfood blend, powdered lemons, beets, matcha, and turmeric root extract.

Organifi claims that its product will help detoxify the body, control cravings, and boost weight loss, but there’s no scientific evidence supporting these claims. It’s also unlikely to make a big difference in your gut health or energy levels unless you struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables, but it could help you drink more water.

Why is Athletic Greens so expensive?

Athletic Greens likely costs more than its competitors because of its extensive ingredient list. It’s also NSF Certified for Sport, which adds additional value.
