Using the SmartCuffs 4.0 

The SmartCuffs 4.0 are very intuitive and easy to use. They come neatly packaged in a convenient carrying case that includes the cuffs, a USB-C charger, and a charging cord. After unboxing, I plugged in the cord and connected it to the cuffs, which you can charge simultaneously—an excellent feature. With their rapid charge capability, the cuffs were fully charged in under 30 minutes, allowing me to quickly connect them via Bluetooth to the SmartCuffs app.

Once synched, I positioned the cuffs on my arms between my shoulder and bicep using simple velcro straps, similar to a weightlifting belt. From there, the app guided me through an initial limb occlusion pressure calibration to establish the optimal pressure for my workout. Finally, I selected my preferred BFR mode and was ready to begin my training session.

The SmartCuffs 4.0 offers three distinct BFR modes: Continuous BFR, intermittent BFR, and resting BFR. 

Continuous BFR

  • The cuffs are inflated during both your working sets and rest sessions
  • Fatigues your muscles at a higher rate
  • Best for advanced rehab exercise

Intermittent BFR

  • The cuffs only inflate when you’re performing a movement
  • Ideal for beginner rehab exercise

Resting BFR

  • The cuffs aren’t inflated when you’re exercising and only inflate during your rest period
  • Best for beginner rehab, de-loading joints, or for those easing into BFR training
  • A great option for advanced rehab when using heavier weights

For my first session, I opted for the intermittent BFR mode. This mode involves setting a percentage of your LOP—30% to 50% for arms and 50% to 80% for legs—before starting your exercise. After hitting the start button on the app, the cuffs inflated within a few seconds, and I began my biceps curls. Once finished, I pressed the stop button, and the cuffs deflated. The app also has built-in timers—a fantastic feature—which tracked my exercise duration and rest periods and helped me stay focused and accountable. In addition, the cuffs themselves are super comfortable, staying securely in place without any pinching of my skin or slippage. 

Overall, they were extremely easy to use, and I could really feel them working. I began my workout with 25-pound biceps curls—something I can typically perform for 20 to 25 reps. However, with the SmartCuffs on, I maxed out around 10 reps, feeling the intensity and effectiveness of the restriction. I also tested the cuffs with shoulder presses, but since I positioned them between my shoulders and biceps, they didn’t contribute much to this workout. This highlights an important aspect of the SmartCuffs: they only affect the muscles between their placement and your heart.

Therefore, while they’re excellent for targeting your triceps, biceps, and forearms, they aren’t as effective for your shoulders, back, or abs. Similarly, for lower-body exercises, the cuffs will work for targeting lower extremities, like your hamstrings, quads, and calves, but they probably won’t impact your glutes, adductors, or abductors.

The SmartCuffs 4.0 are designed with versatility and comfort in mind, offering multiple sizes to accommodate different body types and ensure optimal performance, so I gave them a score of 4.5 out of 5 in this category. Whether you’re targeting upper- or lower-body muscles, the cuffs come in a range of sizes—small, medium, large, and extra large—to fit snugly and securely on your arms or legs.

I chose the medium cuffs to go around my arms and the extra large cuffs for my legs, helping to ensure proper blood flow restriction based on the muscle group I’m training.

On the inside of the strap, the high-quality neoprene material adds an extra layer of comfort, preventing skin pinching, even when the cuffs are fully inflated. Despite their snug fit, the cuffs remain flexible, enabling a full range of motion during exercises—whether you’re lifting weights or performing cardio. They also house a “pre-curled internal stiffener” to help prevent cuff slippage during use.

The SmartCuffs 4.0 offer fully adjustable compression through a user-friendly pneumatic system that ensures precise and consistent pressure during blood flow restriction training, earning a perfect score for compression. Right from the start, the SmartCuffs BFR app guides you through a limb occlusion pressure calibration process, eliminating any guesswork by determining the exact pressure your body needs. This calibration is key since LOP varies significantly between individuals, ensuring a safe and effective training experience tailored just for you.

Do BFR bands work for glutes?

Blood flow restriction bands are not very effective for glute training because they’re designed to restrict blood flow to your limbs, specifically targeting the muscles in your arms and legs. Since your glutes are located in your hip region, it’s more difficult to apply BFR bands in a way that effectively restricts blood flow to this area. Therefore, BFR training can be less impactful for your glutes when compared to other muscles in your legs, like your quads, hamstrings, and calves.
