Our product tester, Caine Wilkes, GGR staff writer and Olympic athlete, tried the vanilla flavor with both water and milk. He preferred the taste when mixed with milk and thought it was bland when combined with water. The protein powder was effortless to mix and produced a smooth consistency after shaking in a shaker bottle.

Price Per Serving

Momentous Grass-Fed Whey is a more expensive protein powder option, and we rated the price per serving a 1 out of 5. Each 1.25-pound bag costs $64.95 for a one-time purchase. There are 24 servings per bag, and each serving costs $2.70. Momentous provides a subscribe and save option, making each order available for $51.96. When you subscribe, each serving comes out to $2.16, which is still on the higher end but a little better.

Formulation

The Momentous Grass-Fed Whey formulation has several commendable features, earning it a rating of 4 out of 5. Notably, it is free from artificial sweeteners, flavors, and dyes, which can be hard to find in protein powders. Natural flavors, stevia, and salt contribute to the flavor of this protein powder.

We also like the low fat and carbohydrate content of Momentous Grass-Fed Whey, making it a good option for those wanting to increase their protein intake without extra calories from other macronutrients.

Of the 3 grams of carbs, two are from fiber, promoting bowel regularity and improved satiety. The 1.5 grams of fat is likely from the sunflower lecithin, which acts as an emulsifier in supplements to improve solubility and reduce the separation of ingredients.

Seeing unfamiliar ingredients such as silica and guar gum on a protein powder label can be unsettling. However, these ingredients in Momentous Grass-Fed Whey are natural and serve to prevent clumping, enhance solubility, and bind ingredients.

Now, let’s talk about protein. We love that Momentous uses grass-fed whey protein isolate, a high-quality complete protein source with all nine essential amino acids important for muscle growth and repair. Whey protein isolate contains less fat and lactose than whey protein concentrate, which could make it a better option for those with mild lactose sensitivities.

Whey is a “fast-acting” protein because it absorbs quickly. It’s thought that about 10 grams of whey protein can be absorbed per hour. This means the 20 grams of protein in a scoop of Momentous Grass-Fed Whey could be absorbed within just two hours post-consumption. Whey is great for a protein shake post-workout because the amino acids are rapidly absorbed to support muscle repair and growth.

Ideally, we would have liked for there to be more than 20 grams of protein per serving. That 20 grams just barely meets the recommended 20 to 40 grams1 of protein every three to four hours to optimize muscle protein synthesis (MPS), the process necessary for building new muscle mass. That said, the exact amount needed for MPS will vary depending on body weight, diet, and activity level.

Finally, Momentous Grass-Fed Whey contains ProHydrolase, an enzyme blend designed to improve the digestion and absorption of protein and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Digestive enzymes in Prohydrolase help break down protein into amino acids to be efficiently used for building muscle and muscle recovery.

Taste and Solubility

Our product tester, Caine, had the opportunity to test the vanilla flavor, rating it a 4 out of 5. He thought it was alright with water but much better with milk. “With milk, the flavor reminded me of vanilla bean ice cream.” However, when mixed with water, he said, “It reminded me of a middle-of-the-road vanilla protein taste.”

A man drinking a Momentous Grass-Fed Whey Protein shake.

Solubility was a slam dunk, earning a rating of 5 out of 5. It mixed completely when using a shaker cup, without any clumps, floaties, or powder sticking to the bottom of the cup.

Side Effects

Caine didn’t experience any side effects after taking Momentous Grass-Fed Whey, so we rated this a 5 out of 5.

Those with a lactose intolerance may want to avoid whey protein. Whey protein isolate could be tolerable for some individuals with mild lactose intolerance because most of the lactose has been removed from the whey. However, those with a severe lactose intolerance may need to avoid whey protein completely, as even a small amount of lactose could lead to gastrointestinal discomfort.

Furthermore, those with a milk allergy should avoid whey protein because it could cause an allergic reaction. Instead, opt for plant-based protein powders or egg white protein powder, as these are not derived from dairy.

Third-Party Testing

Third-party testing assures consumers that their supplements undergo analysis for potentially harmful contaminants. It also confirms that the ingredients listed on the label are actually what’s in the product.

Momentous Grass-Fed Whey is third-party tested by Informed Sport and the NSF. It’s rare to see supplements third-party tested by two agencies, but this indicates that Momentous took the extra step to show consumers that their protein powder contains safe, quality ingredients.

Amazon customers rate Momentous Grass-Fed Whey a 4.3 out of 5 stars. Customers like the ingredients and solubility, but opinions are mixed regarding taste.

Close up view looking down on a hand scooping Momentous Grass-Fed Whey Protein into a stainless steel mug.

One Amazon customer says, “Not only is this protein incredibly clean, but it is delicious!!! Vanilla is very natural tasting, and it mixes great in a blender bottle but can also be mixed into cold milk easily with a spoon. It is a bit pricey, but I believe it’s worth it for the promise of a quality product.” Another writes, “Mixes really well in a shaker bottle. No added sugars. I tried both the vanilla and chocolate—the vanilla was not particularly pleasant tasting to me. The chocolate tastes much better.”

Customers who purchased the product from the Momentous Website rate it 4.66 out of 5 stars. One verified customer writes, “The flavor is very good. Not one of those with the artificial sweetener aftertaste. I use it in a breakfast shake with unsweetened vanilla oat milk, a banana, and organic peanut powder.” Another customer says, “The flavor is very bland and almost has a sour taste. The consistency is really watery.”

Final Verdict of Our Momentous Essential Grass-Fed Whey Protein Review

Momentous Essential Grass-Fed Whey is made with natural, effective, third-party-tested ingredients. We like the quality grass-fed whey protein isolate with a complete amino acid profile but wish there was more protein per serving. The mixability was on point, but our tester and customers had mixed thoughts about the taste. The product is more expensive than many other protein powders, but the quality could be worth it.

  • 20 grams of whey protein isolate per serving
  • Low fat and carb content
  • Third-party tested by two agencies
  • No artificial sweeteners, flavors, or dyes
  • Great solubility but lacks flavor options

Momentous Essential Grass-Fed Whey Protein: FAQs

Is Momentous protein worth it?

Momentous protein may be worth it if you want a supplement with high-quality whey protein and natural ingredients that has been third-party tested. At $2.70 per serving, it is more expensive than many other protein powders, but quality often comes with a higher price tag.

Is grass-fed whey protein good for you?

Grass-fed whey protein is good for most individuals. Momentous Grass-Fed Whey comes from grass-fed cows free from hormones, steroids, and rBST. Whey protein may help you gain muscle, recover after a workout, and boost metabolism. However, it’s best to avoid whey protein if you are allergic to dairy or have a severe lactose intolerance.

Why is Momentous so expensive?

The likely reason for the higher cost of Momentous Whey Protein is its use of premium whey sourced from EU farms. Additionally, using natural ingredients and having the product third-party tested by two agencies adds to the cost.

What are the side effects of grass-fed whey protein?

Whey protein isolate is low in lactose, but those with severe lactose intolerance may experience bloating, cramps, or diarrhea after consuming whey. Furthermore, individuals with a milk allergy could experience an allergic reaction from consuming whey protein. Consider a plant-based protein powder if you have a milk allergy or do not tolerate lactose well. It’s best to consult with your doctor before starting a new dietary supplement.
