How We Selected the Best Vibration Plates
For this category, we want to consider both the size of a vibration plate, as well as how easy it is to move around your house for storage between uses. For a 3-out-of-5-star rating, the vibration plate provides enough space to comfortably stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, but there’s little to no extra space.

Since vibration plates are meant to be compact, yet support your whole body weight, it’s important to carefully test the build quality and overall durability. To earn a 3 out of 5, the vibration plate should offer at least a 300-pound weight capacity, and the materials feel durable, but may show wear and tear over time.

Testing the vibration capabilities of a plate can be tricky, so we carefully consider the technical aspects of a given plate to determine a score for this category. For a 3 out of 5, the plate can achieve accelerations at or near 60 Hz, and the amplitude is close to 11 mm. We also want to see the plate move in multiple directions in-use, not just side-to-side.

Other Vibration Plates We Researched
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of vibration plates on the market, which made it tricky to narrow down this list to our top five. Here are a couple of others we considered that didn’t quite make the cut.
- Viamotion Vibration Plate: We like the compact footprint of this plate, but the limited number of programs and low weight capacity kept it off our list.
- GLYLF Vibration Plate: This plate has strong customer reviews, but the foot plate was a bit narrower than we’d like to see, and we felt it may be too small for taller users.
How We Picked and Tested the Best Vibration Plates

Our durability score is based on the build quality, weight capacity, and overall stability during use. We give 3-out-of-5-star ratings to plates with a 300-pound weight capacity, enough traction to keep you stable, and construction that feels durable, but may show some wear and tear over time.

For this category, we base our scoring on vibration frequency, amplitude, and plane of motion. In addition to a powerful motor, we want to see a plate that moves in multiple directions, not just side-to-side. Most vibration plates have a frequency range of 15-60 Hz and an amplitude of 1-11mm.

Benefits of Vibration Plates
While standing on a vibrating platform may not seem like it’s doing very much, it turns out that there may be a few powerful benefits. We couldn’t find much research to support better muscle recovery, blood circulation, or a greater calorie burn from using vibration plates, but they still have their uses.
Here are the most important benefits you can realistically expect, supported by research and our expert advisor.

Improved Balance and Stability
Since you’re standing on an unstable surface that sends vibrations through your body, you’ll be forced to engage a variety of muscle groups to keep yourself upright. These plates are a great tool to improve your balance and mobility, according to exercise physiologist Chris Mohr, PhD, RD.

“Regularly training on a vibration plate may improve proprioception, which is your ability to sense the position of your body in space,” he explains. “This leads to improved balance and mobility.”
Whether you’re an athlete looking to improve your balance and coordination on the field or an older individual looking to reduce your risk of falls, vibration plates may be a useful addition to your training routine. When you’re trying to brace yourself on a vibration machine, you’ll experience greater muscle activation, especially in smaller muscles that keep you balanced.
Increased Lower-Body Strength
“Vibration plates activate muscles, which can help in muscle toning over time with consistent use and work of the same muscles,” says Chris Mohr, PhD, RD.
It sounds too good to be true, but research on vibration therapy shows that it works, and vibration plates have been shown to improve lower body-strength and power. The oscillating vibration forces smaller muscles in your legs to contract to keep you balanced, which can increase leg strength.
However, it’s worth noting that these gains in strength were compared to doing nothing at all, and a vibration plate probably won’t have the same impact as a great leg workout.
Potential Improvements in Bone Health
There’s some evidence that shows vibration training may be able to support bone mineral density, particularly in older adults and postmenopausal women. With age, bone loss tends to occur, and regular strength training is a great way to offset this and promote stronger bones.
The vibrating surface activates muscle contractions throughout the lower body to keep you balanced, which can in turn lead to improvements in bone density with regular training.
That said, it’s still important to prioritize your strength training, according to Chris Mohr, PhD, RD.
“Vibrations may improve bone density, particularly for those at risk of osteoporosis,” he explains. “However, more research is needed to determine this and it is not a replacement for regular strength training.”
Low-Impact Exercise Alternative
For individuals who may be dealing with the aches and pains of daily life, or recovering from an injury, vibration plate workouts can be a great low-impact alternative to traditional strength training, according to GGR senior staff writer Stephen Sheehan, CPT, CNC.
“While you shouldn’t view them as a replacement for traditional strength and cardio training, vibration plates can be useful for working on your balance without putting strain on your joints,” he explains. “Older adults and those rehabbing from an injury can use one to help improve their strength and coordination with a bit of a blood flow boost.”
Buying Guide: What to Look for in Vibration Plates
While we chose our top five vibration plates for this guide, we know there are countless options on the market to consider. If you’re looking at other options, here are the most important factors to consider when making your purchasing decision.

Price
While vibration plates aren’t necessarily the most expensive piece of equipment you’ll invest in for your home gym, they’re not cheap, either. We recommend planning your budget ahead of time, as plates can range from $70-$200+, and it’s important to begin your shopping with a pre-planned budget in mind.
Weight Capacity
Since vibration plates are often smaller, with plenty of plastic components, you’ll want to check the weight capacity before ordering anything. Surprisingly, for something that’s meant to support your entire bodyweight, the weight capacity can vary quite a bit between units.
We tested units with weight capacities ranging from 260 pounds to 450 pounds, and at the low end, a 260-pound weight limit may be too restrictive for quite a few people. Additionally, you’ll want to consider any household members who may be sharing this plate, too.
Accessories
Most vibration plates should come with some sort of remote control, so you don’t have to squat down on a shaking surface to adjust controls manually.
While that should be a standard feature, certain models of vibration plates also include resistance bands that can be attached to the plate, allowing you to include some resistance training. This seems like a handy feature, however, in our testing we found the bands can be hit-or-miss.
It’s a nice idea, but it can be challenging for manufacturers to include a band that provides appropriate resistance for all users. If you really want to include strength training, get a plate with bands, but if you end up going with a band-free option, you’re probably not missing much.
For those who enjoy using bands, you’re probably better off getting one of the best resistance bands, rather than relying on the band that comes with your vibration plate.
Portability
If you plan on moving your plate around the house, or putting it away between uses, we recommend choosing a light-weight, compact model.
While most are meant to be portable, some units are heavier than others, and we found that some can feel a little bulky and awkward to move. We don’t think most healthy, able-bodied individuals will have any issues with most plates, but those with limited mobility may struggle to move some of the heavier, bulky models.

Yes. While claims about fat-burning and draining the lymphatic system may be overstated, research shows1 that using a whole body vibration platform can improve lower-body strength, balance, and mobility, especially in older adults or those with balance issues.
